The Puget Sound Coho Salmon Enhancement Project
The Muckleshoot and Suquamish Native American Tribes conceptualized a significant project aimed at restoring the Coho Salmon run in Puget Sound. The goal was to not only benefit their tribes' gill net fishing but also to enhance sport fishing in the region. One of the key components of this project was the installation of fish net pens along the Seattle waterfront. These pens are used to hold juvenile salmon before they are released into the wild after maturing, supporting sustainable fish populations in the Sound.
The pens are secured in place with piles and anchors, and driving these piles into the seabed requires specialized equipment. Innovasea, a leading company in aquatic ecosystem solutions, designed these net pens to ensure that juvenile salmon have a safe, stable environment for their early development.
The Role of ICE Equipment
The installation of these net pens required heavy-duty machinery capable of driving large piles into the waterbed. Enter the ICE® Model 14D Vibratory Pile Hammer, a machine known for its powerful performance in even the most challenging underwater conditions. The first juvenile salmon pen was installed in 2006-2007 by Blackwater Construction using ICE® equipment to drive 12 piles. The piles were driven in 30 feet of water and extended 16 feet below the mudline, a feat requiring precise control and significant power.
Fast forward to 2021, when the second net pen was completed. This time, ICE® Model 14D Vibratory Pile Hammer was used to drive 4" x 20' piles into the seabed. Despite a minor issue with the pop-off valve and a pin breaking off, an ICE® technician was on-site to ensure swift repairs, keeping the project on schedule and running smoothly.
