The Hose Company’s Role in Advancing Boston’s Biotech Future: A Partnership with ICE® for the Eli Lilly Institute of Genetic Medicine
Boston has long been recognized as the nation’s center for RNA and DNA research, and it recently saw even greater investment in its biotech sector. Eli Lilly & Co. invested $700 million to lease a 334,000-square-foot genetic medicinal research lab located within a 12-story all-inclusive building on the Boston Seaport. This new facility, the Eli Lilly Institute of Genetic Medicine, was designed to focus on the development of RNA-based medicines, gene therapies, and treatments addressing the root causes of human diseases.
A Massive Undertaking
The Eli Lilly Institute of Genetic Medicine was more than just a research facility—it was a dynamic, all-inclusive space. Not only would it house lab areas, but it would also feature shops, dining spaces, and public entertainment venues. The project was expected to serve over 250 employees, visitors, and locals, all while contributing to Boston’s growing biotech hub.
The Construction Journey: Overcoming Historical Obstacles
The construction of the Eli Lilly Institute began in 2021 when J.F. White Contracting started the process of removing an old paved parking lot at 15 Necco Street. However, the team encountered an unexpected challenge—beneath the surface, large timber piles and debris were discovered. Historical records revealed that the area had once been part of Boston Harbor before being filled in during the 1860s.
In response to this challenge, J.F. White Contracting turned to International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®) for support. The ICE® team provided the necessary equipment, including the ICE® Model 55 Wood Clamp paired with the ICE® 28B Vibratory Driver/Extractor, to pull out nearly 300 wood pilings and clear the extensive debris from the site. Once the site was cleared, J.F. White used the ICE® IP-7 Hydraulic Impact Hammer to install the foundation for the new facility, driving approximately 200 tons of 90-inch H beams into the ground to secure the structure.
Hydraulic Hoses: Powering the Equipment
Hydraulic hoses played a crucial role in ensuring the success of this project. These hoses are essential components in hydraulic systems, enabling the efficient transfer of pressurized fluids to power the machinery and equipment used in construction. The flexibility and durability of hydraulic hoses make them particularly vital for projects that involve movement, vibration, and harsh conditions.
As part of the construction team, The Hose Company contributed to the project by providing high-quality hydraulic and industrial hoses, fittings, and custom assemblies designed to handle the high pressures and challenging environments found on construction sites. With over 10 years of industry experience, The Hose Company ensured the reliable performance of the machinery and equipment used in the construction of the Eli Lilly Institute.
The Importance of Hydraulic Hoses
Hydraulic hoses are the lifeblood of any hydraulic system. They transfer fluids under high pressure, powering critical equipment such as the machines that removed the wood pilings and installed the foundation beams for the new facility. Without these hoses, the transfer of energy and fluid within the systems would be impossible. The durability and flexibility of hydraulic hoses ensure they can withstand the most demanding environments, providing long-lasting and dependable performance.
