In 2024, the City of Beaumont, TX, celebrated a significant milestone with the groundbreaking of the Riverfront Park restoration project, a $17 million effort that marks a revitalization of the park devastated by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Located in the heart of the "Golden Triangle," Beaumont, situated between Houston and Louisiana, is poised for continued growth and development. This restoration project will not only rebuild the park’s pavilions, picnic areas, boat docking facilities, and walking paths but will also provide much-needed protection against erosion and flooding. The Riverfront Park Restoration Project
The park’s restoration is a significant undertaking, with work starting in April 2023. Local government officials selected Callan Marine Ltd., a marine construction company based in Galveston, to lead the project. Callan Marine's expertise in specialty marine contracting made them the perfect fit for the complex and challenging nature of the job, especially considering much of the work needed to be completed from barges.
As of early 2024, several key milestones had already been achieved. These included the installation of interlocking concrete mats for the revetment wall and the completion of a large outfall structure designed to stabilize stormwater discharge lines that run through the park. The dredging needed for the park is 59% complete, and work on installing a bulkhead wall for bank protection is currently underway.
Hydraulic Hoses Powering Key Machinery
At the heart of this construction effort are the powerful machines that drive the piles and create the foundation for the new park features. The hydraulic systems powering these machines rely on high-quality hoses to deliver the pressurized fluid necessary for operations. Specifically, The Hose Company’s Hydrauli-Flex hoses were integral to powering the ICE® IP-10 Hydraulic Impact Hammer and the ICE® 50B Vibratory Hammer used in the piling process.
Hydraulic hoses like Hydrauli-Flex hoses are designed for demanding environments, capable of handling high pressures and withstanding harsh conditions. These hoses are essential in ensuring the efficient transfer of pressurized fluid, powering everything from excavators to vibratory hammers that drive sheet piles into the riverbank. The Hydrauli-Flex hoses used in this project were able to handle the rugged conditions of marine construction, allowing the ICE® equipment to function smoothly and efficiently.
The Role of Hydrauli-Flex Hoses in the Project
The ICE® IP-10 Hydraulic Impact Hammer, powered by the ICE® 350 hydraulic power unit and connected to 120 feet of 36-inch swinging leads, was instrumental in driving 18-inch pipe piles. Custom pile cradles were used to support the weight of the piles, and the hammer drove them into the bank at an angle, creating a stable foundation for the new wharf. The ability of the hydraulic hoses to deliver reliable and consistent pressure to these machines is crucial to ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of this part of the project.
Simultaneously, the ICE® 50B Vibratory Hammer, paired with the ICE® 595H Power Unit, has made driving the sheet piles a straightforward process. The successful installation of 11 pairs of sheet piles by early 2024 underscores the effectiveness of these hydraulic systems.
Challenges and Progress on the Site
Given the nature of the project and the location of much of the work being carried out from barges, the project has posed some unique challenges. Marine construction requires specialized equipment and the ability to work in a constantly shifting environment. However, Callan Marine’s experience with dredging, pile-driving, and working in marine environments has allowed them to keep the project running on time and within budget.
