Rebuilding the Backbone of New Jersey: Hydrauli-Flex Hoses Powered ICE® Equipment on Route 78 Project

In April 2024, Route 78 in Bedminster, NJ, underwent a much-needed upgrade to address the increased volume of traffic that had plagued the area for years. As an essential east-west highway stretching from Harrisburg, PA, to the Holland Tunnel in New York City, I-78 saw over four million trucks annually, representing a staggering 24% of all truck traffic in the United States. Not only did I-78 serve as a critical route for the transportation of goods, but it also connected major international airports like Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International, and LaGuardia, making it vital for both business and leisure travel.

The renovation of this crucial corridor involved wider and safer modernized bridges along the highway. Konkus Corp., a reputable New Jersey-based construction firm, was tasked with overseeing this major project. With their expertise in bridge and highway construction, Konkus quickly recognized the importance of utilizing the right equipment to ensure success. For this portion of the project, it was determined that the ICE® 22D Vibratory Hammer Driver/Extractor would be used to drive and pull 30- and 40-foot steel sheets, which would serve as the deep foundation for the new bridges.

The outdated bridges along this stretch of I-78 were no longer meeting the needs of the growing number of commuters. The renovations aimed to alleviate traffic congestion, reduce accidents, and improve safety. Once the project was completed, these new structures were expected to ease the commute for thousands of drivers who relied on I-78, particularly those traveling into New York City.

ICE® was proud to supply the heavy-duty equipment that Konkus relied on throughout the project. The ICE® 22D Vibratory Hammer Driver/Extractor performed flawlessly in the demanding conditions of this high-traffic corridor, helping to ensure that the bridge foundations were installed efficiently and safely. But even the most powerful machinery requires reliable hydraulic components to function at peak performance.

The role of hydraulic hoses in ICE® Vibratory Hammers and Drills cannot be overstated. These hoses are crucial for maintaining consistent hydraulic pressure, which is essential for the equipment's functionality. The Hose Company’s Hydrauli-Flex hoses are specifically designed to meet these high demands, ensuring that ICE® machinery delivered optimal results on every job. Built for durability and reliability, Hydrauli-Flex hoses withstood the pressures of this complex project, keeping the equipment running smoothly.

The successful completion of this project is a testament to the hard work and expertise of Konkus Corp. and their ability to rely on ICE® equipment and The Hose Company’s Hydrauli-Flex hoses. As a result, the Route 78 corridor in New Jersey is now safer, more efficient, and better equipped to handle the growing demands of transportation in the region. With the new bridges in place, commuters can look forward to reduced congestion, fewer accidents, and more reliable travel.

ICE® is proud to continue providing the deep foundation equipment that contractors trust to tackle critical infrastructure projects like this one.
