Empowering a Greener Future: The Role of Hydruali-Flex Hoses in Supporting Eco-Friendly Projects

At The Hose Company, we were proud to be a part of a cleaner, greener future. Our Hydrauli-Flex hoses played a critical role in supporting a range of construction and energy projects, ensuring that heavy machinery operated at peak performance. As the world strived to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change, we were excited to see our products contribute to groundbreaking projects, such as Heartwell Renewables' innovative renewable diesel plant in Hastings, Nebraska. In this blog, we’ll explore how our hoses were integral to projects like this and the importance of durable hydraulic hoses in powering ICE® equipment, used by Nicholson Construction.

The Carbon Clock and the Need for Renewable Energy

The threat of climate change became more urgent with each passing year. Researchers estimated that the world was rapidly approaching its carbon budget, with about 54 billion tons of CO2 emitted over the past decade, primarily from burning fossil fuels for energy and transportation. In response, industries and companies were looking for sustainable alternatives to reduce their environmental impact. One such initiative was the development of Heartwell Renewables, a joint venture between Cargill and The Love's Family of Companies. This greenfield renewable fuels plant was set to produce renewable diesel, a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel, using feedstocks like beef tallow and distiller's corn oil.

Located in Hastings, Nebraska, Heartwell Renewables was expected to produce up to 80 million gallons of renewable diesel annually. This fuel could be used in existing infrastructure, such as pipelines and diesel engines, without the need for blending, making it a promising solution for decarbonizing road transportation. The plant also created well-paying jobs in the Hastings community and was anticipated to serve as a model for other sustainable fuel projects in the region.

The Role of ICE® Equipment in the Heartwell Renewables Project

To bring this renewable fuels plant to life, Nicholson Construction was tasked with laying the foundation for the facility. To install the auger cast piles, Nicholson relied on their Comacchio CHF 500 Drill Rig, sourced from International Construction Equipment, Inc. (ICE®). For tougher soil conditions, the company used an ICE® 115-50 Hydraulic Rotary Head, which delivered up to 122,000 ft-lbs of torque to ensure the piles were driven deep enough for a solid foundation.

To ensure maximum efficiency and reduced environmental impact, Nicholson Construction opted for ICE®'s Tier 4 Power Units, equipped with CAT diesel engines. These power units met strict EPA standards, reducing particulate matter (PM) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by up to 99%. Additionally, these engines offered improved fuel economy by up to 5%, which resulted in lower maintenance costs and less environmental impact. By using ICE® equipment, Nicholson Construction was aligning its practices with its goal of reducing its collective impact on the environment by 40% by 2030.

Hydraulic Hoses: The Unsung Heroes of ICE® Equipment

While the spotlight was often on the heavy machinery, it’s important to remember the unsung heroes that ensured this equipment operated smoothly: hydraulic hoses. At The Hose Company, we manufactured Hydrauli-Flex hoses that were crucial to the performance of ICE® Vibratory Hammers and Drills. These hoses facilitated the efficient transfer of hydraulic fluid, which powered the equipment's operations, ensuring that every piece of machinery worked at its peak performance in the toughest conditions.

Hydrauli-Flex hoses were designed with durability and reliability in mind, withstanding extreme pressures and harsh environments. Our hoses were built to handle the demanding needs of ICE® equipment, from foundation drilling to pile driving, while minimizing downtime and maximizing productivity. In challenging projects like the construction of Heartwell Renewables, these hoses played a pivotal role in ensuring that the equipment operated smoothly, efficiently, and with minimal environmental impact.

A Commitment to Sustainability

At The Hose Company, we were deeply committed to supporting sustainability in the industries we served. The partnership between Nicholson Construction and ICE® highlighted how the adoption of advanced emission control technologies, such as Tier 4 Power Units and Hydrauli-Flex hoses, could help drive the transition to more sustainable practices. By investing in eco-friendly equipment and products, we helped companies like Heartwell Renewables pave the way for a cleaner, greener future.

We were proud to be a part of projects that not only pushed the boundaries of innovation but also contributed to the reduction of our collective carbon footprint. The construction of the renewable diesel plant in Hastings was just one example of how industries were adopting sustainable practices and technologies to combat climate change, and we were thrilled to have played a role in this vital mission.
